Lets Do Lunch Amigos!

On our first full day in Madrid we ventured into the vibrant and bustling Plaza Del Sol area.  It was an easy walk from our studio apartment that took about 20 minutes.  The walk to the plaza was on cobblestone streets lined with interesting shops of every kind, the old architecture of the mainly stone buildings is fabulous!  We arrived at the plaza and sat at the centerpiece fountain for a moment to just take everything in.  There was a national day of “check your cholesterol” event complete with a very long line of Spaniards no doubt taking advantage of this national healthcare supported screening.  From there, we meandered up and down local streets that continually brought us back to the central plaza.  We then settled into a comfy table on a side street where we had the following delicious 3 course traditional menu del dia Spanish lunch and bottle of wine for $26 at Dehesa Santa Maria.

First course; white Asparagus vs. Pig...Pig wins, oink!

Main course, 1 of 2. Looks simple and it's delicious! Tender and flavorful chicken with perfectly fried potatoes and a creamy sauce. Yum. This round goes to the Chicken!

This dish too had perfectly cooked potatoes, there was something so different about these tasty spuds! -- cooked twice possibly? The little Padron Peppers were amazing and the skewered beef with vegetables had nice flavor but not as much as the chicken -- still, nothing to complain about!

Melon with caramel sauce, interesting and tasty but this one goes to the flan!

Disclosure: I (Mike) am a huge Flan fan so Nancy tipped the scale in this one winning -- deservedly so! Rich, dense and creamy. The caramel sauce was spot on, no jarred stuff!

Taking it all in.
